An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) or an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) is the formal process used to predict the environmental and socio-economic consequences of a plan, policy, program or project prior to the decision to move forward with the proposed action. Environmental auditing and EIA are environmental management tools, while EIA takes place before an activities undergo to predict the impact on the environment of a future action and provide information to project authorizer. Environmental auditing is carried out when a development is already in place, and is used to check on existing practices, assessing the environmental effects of current activities.
