Natural Resource Monitoring using Google Earth Engine

Course Introduction

This course introduces participants to the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform for scalable, cloud-based environmental analysis. It provides a practical foundation in remote sensing and the use of satellite imagery for natural resource monitoring, including vegetation, water, and soil. Participants will learn how to write scripts in JavaScript, process Earth observation datasets, and conduct temporal analyses. The course is ideal for professionals in forestry, water management, conservation, or environmental monitoring who need tools to derive actionable insights from satellite data. It culminates in a mini-project where participants apply GEE to a relevant real-world issue.

Key concepts are delivered through the following focused modules:

  • Module 1: Introduction to Remote Sensing and GEE 1 week
  • Module 2: Earth Observation Datasets and Pre-processing
  • Module 3: Natural Resource Monitoring Applications I Land and Vegetation
  • Module 4: Natural Resource Monitoring Applications II Water and Soil
  • Module 5: Project Development and Reporting

Key Learning Outcomes

  1. 1. Understand the fundamentals of satellite remote sensing and cloud-based geospatial analysis.

  2. 2. Navigate and use the GEE Code Editor to explore datasets, write JavaScript code, and visualize geospatial data.

  3. 3. Access and process satellite data (e.g., Landsat, Sentinel, MODIS) for monitoring natural resources.

  4. 4. Develop workflows for land cover classification, vegetation and forest monitoring, water resources assessment, and change detection.

  5. 5. Apply GEE for practical decision-making in resource management, environmental assessment, and policy support.

  6. 6. Download and share results in usable formats (e.g., GeoTIFFs, CSVs, web apps).

  7. 7. Design a basic monitoring project tailored to their agency or sectoral needs using GEE.
