Tilapia Farming: Seed Production, Grow-out, and Health Management

Course Introduction

This course introduces participants to Nile tilapia aquaculture, covering the complete production cycle from hatchery-based seed production and nursery management to grow-out systems and fish health management. Through expert-led lectures, hands-on practical sessions, and technical visits to commercial hatcheries and farms in Thailand, participants will gain practical knowledge and technical skills to support efficient and sustainable tilapia production.

This program covers:

  1. 1. Nile tilapia strains, culture systems, and aquaculture trends in Asia

  2. 2. Broodstock selection, hatchery management, and seed production including sex-reversal and mono-sex fry production

  3. 3. Larval rearing, nursery management, and fry transportation

  4. 4. Grow-out systems: pond culture, cage culture, Biofloc technology, and RAS

  5. 5. Water quality management and pond/tank preparation

  6. 6. Fish health management, disease diagnostics (including PCR-based methods), and biosecurity

  7. 7. Farm design: hatchery tanks, incubation units, nursery and grow-out pond/tank layout

  8. 8. Farm management economics: cost structure, profitability, record-keeping, and farm action planning

  9. 9. Field visits to commercial hatcheries (including Manit Farm, Phetchaburi) and cage culture sites (Kanchanaburi)

  10. 10. Group Action Plan (GAP): participants develop and present farm-level action plans for peer review and discussion

Key Learning Outcomes

  1. 1. Understand tilapia biology, reproductive cycle, and commercial strains.

  2. 2. Apply broodstock management, breeding, egg collection, incubation, and sex-reversal techniques.

  3. 3. Design and manage nursery and grow-out systems (pond, cage, Biofloc, RAS).

  4. 4. Implement water quality monitoring, feed optimization, and stage-specific feeding strategies.

  5. 5. Apply disease diagnostics, biosecurity, and health management in tilapia farming.

  6. 6. Evaluate farm economics and develop evidence-based farm action plans.
