Crop Simulation and Selection of Crops for Climate Adaptation

Course Introduction

This course empowers professionals working in agriculture, climate resilience, and food security to utilize advanced modeling tools for evaluating crop suitability under changing climate conditions. By focusing on Agro-Ecological Zoning (AEZ) and the PyAEZ modeling platform, participants will gain the skills to simulate crop growth, analyze biophysical constraints, and map areas suitable for climate-smart agriculture. The course also explores future climate scenarios using CMIP6 and supports the development of adaptation strategies through scenario-based planning. By the end of the program, participants will be equipped to generate crop suitability maps and advise on resilient agricultural practices and policy interventions.

The course is delivered through the following structured modules:

  • Module 1 – Introduction to AEZ and Climate Adaptation
  • Module 2 – Building the AEZ Input Environment
  • Module 3 – Running PyAEZ for Crop Suitability
  • Module 4 – Climate Change Scenarios and Adaptation
  • Module 5 – Visualization, Interpretation, and Application

Key Learning Outcomes

  1. 1. Understand principles of agro-ecological zoning and crop suitability

  2. 2. Use PyAEZ to simulate crop growth under various future climate scenarios

  3. 3. Analyze and interpret results of land suitability assessments

  4. 4. Apply results to support climate-resilient crop selection and agricultural policy planning

  5. 5. Communicate simulation results through maps and reports
